Hello! I'm Daniel Mays, a Network Engineer with 2 years of experience in the IT sector. I would like to eventually specialise in network security, troubleshooting and network management.
My educational background is in Physics; I love solving real world problems. I am passionate about learning and understanding how things work! I worked as a Biomedical Engineer for 6 years, where I was able to become a trusted and experienced asset to the NHS. I particularly enjoyed servicing and maintaining critical medical equipment, including patient monitors, defibrillators, anesthetic machines, endoscopy camera stacks and many more. I also thrived under stressful situations, where I was regularly called out into surgery, in order to assist with equipment breakdowns. In my current role as a Network Engineer, I am performing a variety of tasks; From diagnosing broadband faults, helping to resolve network issues, Office 365 and many more ICT related queries.
The transition from Physics student, to Bio-Medical Engineer and to Network Engineer has been incredibly rewarding. In the two years that I have spent as a networking engineer, I have vastly improved my fault finding skills; at first, I found it incredibly difficult to diagnose problems over the phone, as I was used to a more hands-on approach. I quickly found ways to deal with this; my favourite way to visualise a problem, particularly a networking issue, is using a whiteboard (throwback to my physics days!). Another area of improvememnt that has exponentially increased, is my confidence. I am actively trying to improve my confidence in my abilities and my visual/vocal confidence. This is very important for customers to feel as they are in safe hands, during a time in which their systems may be failing.
I am looking to complete my CCNA this year.I have also an interest in Linux and Python; I would like to further understand automation and programming, in oder to boost productivity. I am also in the process of learning about firewalls too, in order to compliment my CCNA studies.
December 2022 - Present
Responsible for understanding basic networks, ensuring high levels of security and performance for the clients and assisting Senior Network Engineers. Whilst also assisting the Helpdesk Team with incoming calls.
December 2018 - November 2022
Servicing and maintaining the fleet of medical equipment in order to ensure patient and colleague safety.
December 2016 - November 2018
Assisted the team to ensure planned preventitive maintenance, repairs and the Equipment Library are fully stocked and running smoothly.
Deligating work to students, to ensure the business is operating effectively. I very much enjoyed working with them to produce high quality technical manuals and procedures for our colleagues.
Effectively delivered a migration of data during a client merger. Used O365 admin tools in order to bulk export/inport data.
Led an effort to streamline the onboarding process of new customers onto SharePoint. I created new documents for engineers to follow and some training material for the customers. I used Microsoft training material and videos to inform the customers, to increase their confidence in the system
I have now taken the exam and not passed, yet.I will retake the exam again this year. I am currently working through Cisco material, building labs in Packet Tracer and configuring my Cisco 800 Series router and Cisco Catalyst 2960-CG Series Switch. Upon reflection, I would like to gain more hands-on experience configuring networking equipment and to continue to answer test questions.
